Souza makes positive Porto debut after Tottenham loan move

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Souza made his first appearance for FC Porto on Friday night, starting in their 3-1 friendly victory over Deportivo La Coruña at the Riazor.

The 20-year-old left-back has had to wait for his opportunity since joining Porto on a season-long loan in August, but he made the most of his first outing, providing the assist for André Silva to put the Portuguese side ahead in the second half.

Speaking to Porto’s official website after the game, Souza admitted he was delighted to finally make his debut in the famous blue and white shirt.

“I felt really good; I’m very happy to make my debut in this beautiful, wonderful shirt.”

Souza also praised the Porto squad for their efforts during the friendly, with the club preparing to return to competitive action.

The Tottenham youngster was equally positive about his experience since arriving in Portugal, revealing that his adaptation to life at Porto has gone better than expected.

“It’s been a wonderful experience, better than I expected. Everyone at FC Porto has welcomed me warmly and is helping me with the adaptation process. I just want to give something back,” he said.

For Souza, the challenge now is to turn an encouraging debut into regular first-team involvement.

His arrival at Tottenham in January was followed by just four senior appearances before he was sent to Porto for the season, with Andy Robertson’s arrival further increasing competition at left-back.

A strong performance against Deportivo gives Souza a platform to build from as he looks to establish himself under Francesco Farioli and gain the regular senior football Tottenham will hope he can bring back to North London.
