Roberto De Zerbi has backed Mateus Fernandes to make his mark at Tottenham, describing the midfielder as a “great player” and insisting he needs time to settle into his new surroundings.
The Spurs head coach made clear that he has strong faith in Fernandes, even as the midfielder continues to adapt to life at the club.
“Fernandes is a great player. Maybe one of the best in our team. He needs time to understand the club. He needs time to come inside the environment of the club. I have big confidence in him and all the confidence of the club but he needs time. We have to give him time,” he told the club’s official website.
De Zerbi’s comments amount to a strong public show of support for the Portuguese midfielder. By suggesting Fernandes could be one of the best players in the squad, the Spurs boss has underlined the level of belief he has in the youngster’s ability.

His message was also clear about the adjustment required. Learning a club’s expectations, finding a place within the dressing-room environment and adapting to a new setting can take time, and De Zerbi appears keen to ensure Fernandes is not judged too quickly.
The manager also stressed that the confidence is shared by the club, suggesting Fernandes has backing beyond the head coach himself.
For Tottenham supporters, De Zerbi’s words offer an indication of the midfielder’s standing behind the scenes.
The challenge now is to give Fernandes the time he needs to settle and translate that potential into consistent performances on the pitch.
It remains to be seen whether Fernandes will start for Tottenham against Manchester United this weekend, with De Zerbi’s men in desperate need of a positive performance and Premier League points.
