Ex-Spurs man’s pedigree grows as reports of national scouting emerge

Will Lankshear’s remarkable start to life at Middlesbrough has put the former Tottenham Hotspur striker firmly on England’s radar, with a senior scout expected to watch him against Wrexham on Wednesday.

According to TEAMtalk, an England scout is due at the Racecourse Ground as Thomas Tuchel’s staff continue to assess the 21-year-old ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain and Croatia.

Lankshear has been in outstanding form since leaving Spurs for Middlesbrough in the summer. The striker has scored 16 goals this season for Kim Hellberg’s side, making an immediate impact in the Championship.

The striker has already represented England at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level, scoring on his Under-21 debut in September.

A senior call-up would be a significant step for Lankshear, particularly given how rarely players from the Championship are selected for England. However, the presence of a scout at Wednesday’s match should not be mistaken for confirmation that he will be included in the next squad.

There has already been plenty of discussion about Lankshear’s international potential. talkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham has backed him to earn a senior cap before the end of the season, while BBC Sport recently reported on the growing conversation around his chances.

For Tottenham supporters, his progress will be particularly interesting after the club agreed to sell the academy graduate in July. We recently looked at why Spurs could regret letting Will Lankshear go, with his goalscoring form continuing to raise questions about the decision.

Wednesday’s trip to Wrexham offers another opportunity for Lankshear to strengthen his case. England’s next squad announcement will reveal whether his form has done enough to earn him a place.
